Guiding is a technique originally developed for people who are blind, which is also useful for people who have low vision or combined vision and hearing impairment who require support to navigate unfamiliar environments. Using this approach, the person with low vision holds on to the guide’s arm as they walk. It is important for the guide to lead by walking slightly ahead. Different people will have their own preferences about how they like to be guided.

This two day training provides participants with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills to confidently and safely guide a person who is blind, has low vision or combined vision and hearing loss. The training is facilitated by experienced Senses Australia Orientation and Mobility Instructors. Participants will learn how to guide navigating a range of scenarios indoors, outdoors and using public transport.
