Would you like to help someone with a disability live a better life?
Senses Australia works with, and for children and adults who are unable to live with their families and provide them with an alternative family to live with.
Host Families can be a family, a couple or a single person. They play a special role in the lives of children and adults with disability and ensure they are given a safe, stable and nurturing environment to grow, as well as welcoming them to become part of your family.
We are currently searching for full-time or respite (weekend) Host Families. If you are a reliable, empathetic and compassionate person who would like to make a long term commitment to nurture the development and growth of a person with disability, we would love to hear from you.
THE ASSESSMENT PROCESS
To become a Host Family, you will undertake a comprehensive assessment. We will guide you through the requirements and conditions related to becoming a Host Family.
Before the assessment process can commence, potential Host Families have to complete a series of security checks, including:
- Working With Children
- Form 395 Security Check (which is conducted by the Department for Child Protection and Family Support)
A Family Support Coordinator will meet with the potential Host Family on several occasions to complete a number of questionnaires and case studies to determine their suitability.
A Home Practical Checklist will be completed to ensure it is both a safe and suitable environment.
The assessment process can take up to 3 months.
It is desirable you have some knowledge of, or experience in working with people with disability and/or complex needs, however this is not essential.
Host Families will be provided with intensive support, initial and ongoing training to assist you to enrich the adult and/or child’s quality of life.
